W Koh Samui Review — Is W Koh Samui worth it?
Reviewed by Andrew Willcox, ATraveller. Rating: 9/10. W Koh Samui is a 74-villa beachfront resort on Mae Nam Beach on the north coast of Koh Samui, Thailand. Part of Marriott Bonvoy (W Hotels). ATraveller booked this property on a Marriott Luminous preferred partner rate, providing early check-in from 08:15 (extraordinary for an early-morning arrival), a resort credit, breakfast, and VIP room recognition. The property features private villas each with their own pool, the Whatever/Whenever personal service via WhatsApp, Alec Monopoly artwork throughout, Shook restaurant (one of the best hotel breakfasts in Thailand), SIP Beach Bar, WooBar with panoramic views and fire shows, and a high-quality Technogym FIT gym. Couples and honeymooners are particularly well served. Beach is technically public access but the hotel manages the cabana area well. ATraveller can book W Koh Samui with Marriott Luminous benefits at the same rate as booking direct.
Hotel Review
W Koh Samui
Beach Resort · Koh Samui, Thailand
74 villas · Beachfront · Mae Nam Beach · Marriott Bonvoy
Having arrived into Koh Samui on a rather early morning flight from Bangkok, we were hopeful and optimistic about the early check-in benefit extended to our clients. We had planned a two-night stay but — as often happens at places like this — ended up extending it when we discovered just how exceptional the service and setting truly are.
The W Koh Samui sits on Mae Nam Beach on the quieter north coast of the island — a deliberate departure from the busier tourist strips further south. It's a place with genuine character: Alec Monopoly's artwork splashed across the lobby walls, the Gulf of Thailand framed at every turn, and a Whatever/Whenever team that means exactly what the name suggests.
Arrival
We arrived at the W at around 08:15, having only just disembarked a Bangkok Airways A319 some 45 minutes earlier. Arrival was warm — cold towels were offered immediately, doors were opened without prompting, and we were escorted through to sit in the lobby where welcome drinks were waiting. The W's signature boldness announces itself the moment you step inside: an expansive Alec Monopoly mural wraps the lobby walls and a "Good Morning" message is inlaid into the entrance path, setting the tone perfectly.

Check-in was prompt, and we were delighted to hear that the room would be ready within an hour and a half — remarkable at 08:15. This early check-in is a brilliant benefit extended to all our clients booking on a Marriott Luminous rate. The What/Whenever team reached out via WhatsApp almost immediately, asking if there was anything we needed — a service that proved invaluable throughout the stay.

Villa 144
After a brief wait we were golf buggied to our villa, where the bags had already been delivered. Walking in to find a bright blue private pool and lush gardens — with an upgrade to a villa closer to the beach — was a genuinely joyful moment. The buggy service operates across the property and is on-call throughout the stay.

The villa is well laid out with the bathroom on the left as you enter — nearly equal in size to the living and sleeping space. Sliding doors in both the bathroom and bedroom allow you to step out, rinse off and re-enter without trailing water through the villa. A particularly thoughtful design detail. The private pool runs the full length of the villa and is illuminated at night — one of those features that turns the simple act of an evening dip into something genuinely atmospheric.

The villa is well connected with a Harman Kardon sound system that carries comfortably across the entire space. TVs are placed in both the bedroom and the bathroom. The wardrobe spans the full width of the room — sliding one side reveals hanging storage and suitcase space; the other conceals the desk. Bedside plug access is excellent, with both wall sockets and USB on both sides of the bed. The outdoor daybed has its own wall socket — ideal for working from outside.

The welcome gift was thoughtful — a handwritten note from the room stylist along with local gifts, and a turndown service that elevated the room for the evening. The Whatever/Whenever team clearly take the "whatever" part seriously. When I asked over WhatsApp whether they would be showing the Formula 1, they checked immediately. The interaction that followed regarding whether I could take the silver decorative item — and the warmth with which it was handled — is one of those small moments that define a genuinely guest-centric property.

The Bathroom
The bathroom is genuinely special — and it's set up with purpose. The freestanding bathtub is more plunge pool than bath; it took over 30 minutes to fill to half full. Mirrors throughout rotate and pivot, meaning you can see yourself from almost any position in the room. There are two showers — one inside with Alec Monopoly mosaic tile work, one outside under the sky. A separate toilet with closing door. Double vanity sinks on a black marble counter, stocked with W-branded amenities alongside the full bathroom kit in the drawers. The whole space opens to the pool via sliding glass doors, blurring the line between indoors and out.

Outside Area & Pool
The outdoor space is generous and genuinely usable throughout the day. The covered daybed at the back is positioned well for shade and protected against the afternoon rain — with a wall socket nearby for anyone working from outside. The sun chairs at the far end catch the afternoon light at the perfect angle. The private pool runs the length of the villa and can be entered from both the bedroom and the bathroom sides — a thought-through feature that means you're never more than a few steps away from the water.

Design Note
One minor design gripe: in heavy rain the outdoor area does flood slightly at the entrance — something that was evident during a tropical downpour during our stay. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.

The Beach
The W sits directly on Mae Nam Beach — a quiet, wide stretch of sand along the north coast of the island. The hotel's beach cabanas are elegant and well placed, with the SWEET SPOT kiosk nearby offering complimentary cold water, sports drinks, ice lollies and ice cream for guests — a genuinely brilliant touch that costs nothing but earns considerable goodwill.

One honest note: the beach is technically public — non-guests do make their way down to the sand, and on a busy day you'll notice mismatched towels and belongings from day visitors. It's a shame that it's not private, but the hotel manages the cabana area well, and Mae Nam is less busy than beaches elsewhere on the island, meaning it rarely feels overcrowded.

Dining & Bars
The SIP Beach Bar & Grill is the standout casual venue — positioned right on the beach with direct views over the Gulf. I took full advantage of the F&B credit here, enjoying their banana chips and cocktails over several afternoons. The signature black burger is worth ordering.

We also enjoyed the fire show at the WooBar one evening — a genuinely spectacular piece of entertainment. The WooBar itself sits high above the property with 360° views across the villas, the beach and the Gulf beyond. Based on conversations with other guests, Namu (Thai cuisine), Shook (where the extensive breakfast buffet is held) and The View are all spoken of very highly — though we didn't have time to experience each in full.
Breakfast at Shook
Breakfast is served at Shook, and it is one of the more impressive hotel breakfast spreads I have encountered. The buffet covers an enormous range: a live cage-free egg station serving everything from classic Eggs Benedict to Thai omelettes; an Indian breakfast station with masala dosa, cheese dosa and poori; an extensive Asian station; freshly cut tropical fruit and fresh coconuts branded with the W logo; a granola and honey bar; and a substantial bread, cheese and charcuterie selection. The setting — with carved wooden walls and Alec Monopoly artwork — is as striking as the food itself.

FIT (Gym)
The FIT gym is one of the better hotel gyms I have used. Technogym throughout — full range of resistance machines, a well-stocked free weights area with dumbbells up to at least 30kg, barbells and a cable stack, treadmills and cardio equipment including an elliptical and rower. Yoga mats branded with the W logo are stacked in a wooden box. The gym is air-conditioned and open 24/7 — mirrors on one side, with W Hotels properties playing on a screen in the corner. A solid facility by any hotel standard.

Getting Around
The hotel arranged moped hire directly, which is the ideal way to explore the island. Koh Samui is best seen on two wheels — the road that circumnavigates the island is well-paved and manageable, and the north coast in particular offers quiet roads past local temples, markets and coconut farms. The hotel's buggy service covers the property grounds and the beach access road, which is sufficient for most in-resort movement.

The Verdict
"W Koh Samui is the type of hotel that earns repeat visits. The villas are exceptional, the beach offering is strong — minor public access aside — and the Whatever/Whenever service model is delivered here with genuine heart. We planned two nights and extended. The breakfast at Shook is one of the best hotel breakfast offerings I have encountered, the gym is a proper facility and the service throughout was personalised and proactive. It is not flawless — the beach isn't private and there is the odd design quirk — but for the standard of what is on offer, it punches well above its weight for the price point. Highly recommended for couples, honeymooners and anyone who appreciates a hotel that genuinely wants you to have a good time."
Who It's For
Couples and honeymooners will find this property particularly well suited — the villa configuration, turndown service and Whatever/Whenever attentiveness make it ideal for a romantic stay. Families are welcome and the property caters for them, though the vibe is distinctly grown-up. Those who enjoy a quality gym, strong food and a beach that doesn't require a taxi will feel well served here.
