W Bangkok Review — Is W Bangkok worth it?
Reviewed by Andrew Willcox, ATraveller. Rating: 9/10. W Bangkok is a 403-room hotel on North Sathorn Road in Bangkok, Thailand — part of Marriott Bonvoy (W Hotels). The hotel is unique in the W brand for occupying a complex that incorporates a beautifully restored 19th-century heritage mansion, which served as the Soviet, later Russian, Embassy from 1948 to 1999 and now operates as The House on Sathorn with Axel restaurant. The main tower lobby features a tuk-tuk indicator light art installation in the lift lobby — hundreds of actual vehicle indicator lights embedded floor to ceiling — a distinctly Bangkok piece of design. The FIT gym is multi-room with Technogym throughout, dumbbells to 50kg, functional training rig, punch bag and a Thai deity glass panel artwork. Kitchen Table restaurant serves one of the best hotel breakfasts in Bangkok — Thai street food trolley with satay and pad kra pao, live egg station, artisanal pastries and a fresh juice bar. ATraveller can book W Bangkok with Marriott Luminous preferred partner benefits: room upgrade, daily breakfast, hotel credit, early check-in and late check-out at the same rate as booking direct.
Hotel Review
W Bangkok
City Hotel · North Sathorn Road, Bangkok
403 rooms · Heritage House on Sathorn · FIT Gym · WET Deck · AWAY Spa · Marriott Bonvoy
There are few hotels in Bangkok that genuinely stop you in your tracks on arrival. The W Bangkok is one of them. It occupies a remarkable position on North Sathorn Road — a glass tower rising above a cluster of beautifully restored colonial buildings that once served as the Soviet, later Russian, Embassy from 1948 to 1999. The tension between the historic mansion and the contemporary hotel behind it is what makes this property unlike anything else in the city.
We arrived in Bangkok from Hong Kong as a newly engaged couple — I had proposed at the Conrad the night before — and the W Bangkok already knew. The room had been decorated with "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" spelt out in gold foil balloons across the headboard, pink balloons scattered across the bed, and a personalised engagement card signed by the hotel. It was one of the most thoughtful room moments of any hotel I have stayed in.
Arrival — The Heritage Setting
The approach to the W Bangkok is one of its great assets. The hotel entrance on Sathorn Road is marked by a lit "W Bangkok" sign framed by white colonial columns and a wrought iron gate — understated by day, rather striking at night. The motor court beyond leads to a fountain with the signature gold W logo, framed by the illuminated heritage mansion. The juxtaposition of old and new is immediately apparent and entirely deliberate.

The check-in experience takes place in the main hotel tower lobby, which is a dramatic contrast to the heritage exterior. The desk area is set against neon-purple lighting and polished black marble, the kind of low-lit, mood-forward design that is quintessentially W. The tuk-tuk light installation in the lift lobby — hundreds of actual vehicle indicator lights embedded in a floor-to-ceiling artwork — is one of the most memorable lift journeys in any hotel. It is very Bangkok.

The Room — and the Proposal Surprise
Our room was on the 16th floor — room 1617 — a Wonderful Room with a city view. The W Bangkok room design is bold without being fussy: ivory and cream tones, black crocodile-print surfaces, chrome detailing and a wardrobe unit finished in textured lacquer. The bedside tablet controls lighting, air conditioning, do not disturb, and a full room service menu. The desk is a glass-and-chrome affair with universal sockets and the minibar — the W Mixbar — sits behind the bed unit stocked with Bacardi, Grey Goose, Hennessy, Jameson, Beefeater and mixer options.

The room service tray arrived on the hotel's signature orange tray — a club sandwich and burger with shoestring fries. Presentation was clean and the food well executed for in-room dining. The order and delivery were smooth throughout.

The Bathroom
The bathroom at W Bangkok leans hard into its design-forward aesthetic: black lacquered surfaces, chrome fixtures and an open-plan layout that integrates seamlessly with the bedroom. The vanity is a floating chrome unit with a curved sink and a large backlit mirror. Amenities are Skin Regimen — a clean-beauty brand used across W Hotels — presented in matte black pump bottles. The shower cubicle is glass-enclosed and spacious, with good water pressure.

The W Lounge
The W Lounge is located on the ground floor adjacent to the lobby and functions as an all-day bar and lounge. The ceiling installation is its signature feature: enormous sculptural blue metallic forms suspended overhead, creating the impression of dramatic storm clouds in an otherwise warm, tonal interior. Perforated timber panelling, leather barstools and grey upholstered sofas give the space real texture. A central pastry and coffee counter sits alongside a full cocktail bar. The Lounge is open to all guests but primarily serves as a working café by day and a cocktail bar by evening.

Breakfast at Kitchen Table
Breakfast at Kitchen Table — the hotel's all-day restaurant — is one of the strongest hotel breakfast offerings in Bangkok. The restaurant is a bold, energetic space: high ceilings, large windows overlooking the heritage garden, and a vibrant colour palette of orange, gold and warm timber. The buffet spread is enormous: a dedicated Thai street food trolley under a "Local Spice & Sunshine" banner with satay skewers, pad kra pao and nam prik condiments; a full Western section with a live egg station; artisanal bread and pastry counter with croissants, Danish pastries and muffins; a fresh juice and Thai milk tea station in wooden barrel tubs on ice; and a large tropical fruit spread.

The House on Sathorn
The House on Sathorn is the jewel in the W Bangkok's crown — a national heritage villa that served as the Soviet, later Russian, Embassy from 1948 to 1999 and has been converted into one of Bangkok's finest dining venues. Axel restaurant occupies the main dining room, a stunning oval bay-windowed space with original parquet flooring, damask wallpaper, a sweeping chandelier and purple leather banquette seating. It is theatrical in the best possible sense. The garden courtyard outside is used for afternoon tea and events, framed by the colonial architecture and lush tropical planting.

FIT Gym & WET Deck
The FIT gym at W Bangkok is one of the better hotel gyms in the city — a multi-room facility on the 6th floor with Technogym equipment throughout. The weight room contains two full racks of rubber-coated dumbbells (up to 50kg), a separate chrome dumbbell rack, cable machines, a functional training rig and a Sidea punch bag. A second room houses three Technogym treadmills, bikes and a stretch area with a traditional Thai mural screen. The walls throughout carry detailed Thai deity artwork on glass panels. The amenity station — clean towels, energy drinks and chilled water — is a small but well-considered touch. The WET Deck pool sits immediately adjacent, with navy blue sun loungers and colourful W Bangkok branded cushions.

The Verdict
"The W Bangkok is the most architecturally interesting W hotel I have stayed in — the heritage complex genuinely sets it apart from every other property in the brand. The room is well-designed and tech-forward, the FIT gym is exceptional for a city hotel, and the breakfast at Kitchen Table is among the best in Bangkok. The engagement room setup was flawlessly executed and the kind of gesture that turns a hotel stay into a memory. It is not the most polished luxury property in the city in terms of finishes — the room design is showing its age in places — but for character, energy and sheer Bangkok atmosphere, nothing quite matches it."
Who It's For
