City Hotel · Admiralty, Hong Kong

513 rooms · Pacific Place · Floors 40–61 · Hilton Honors

The Conrad Hong Kong has occupied the upper floors of the Pacific Place complex in Admiralty since 1990, a position that provides striking urban settings. Rooms begin on the 40th floor, which means the views across Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon skyline are consistently spectacular. It is a hotel of a certain era: classically elegant, formally presented, and unapologetically grand in the way that the great city hotels of the early 1990s were built to be.

We arrived directly from our Cathay Pacific flight from Brisbane, still riding the high of our recent engagement. Our stay demonstarted excellent customer service, and a great exmaples of where service can compensate ageing design.

Arrival - The Redeye Punishment

Lauren left her phone in the taxi on arrival. A mistake that can be understood after a redeye, and amusingly exactly the same mistake I made following a night out in Hong Kong during my last visit. Lauren only noticed at check-in, and was visibly distressed. We informed the concierge team, who immediately took ownership of the situation, tracking down the taxi's licence plate, contacting the driver, and reassuring us that everything would be done to recover it. I asked them to keep us in the loop and we headed out to explore Mong Kok, with Lauren understandably distracted.

Midway through our walk, a notification came through on the Hilton app: the phone had been found. When we returned to the hotel, we discovered the concierge had not only recovered the phone but had charged it and left a handwritten note reading "You never had anything to worry about." It was a thoughtful, instinctive act, they had noticed just how upset Lauren was, charged the phone so it was ready to use, and provided the kind of reassurance that no service training manual can fully script. It set the tone for the service we would receive during our stay.

The lobby sets the tone immediately: vast, marble-clad and flooded with natural light, with enormous gold-leaf columns and that particular stillness that only very established luxury hotels manage. The Conrad has occupied its position at the top of Pacific Place, one of Hong Kong's premier retail and commercial complexes, since 1990.

The Room

Rooms at the Conrad Hong Kong begin on the 40th floor and every one of them has views. Ours looked directly across to Kowloon, with Victoria Harbour in the middle distance and the International Commerce Centre visible on the far bank. The room itself is a study in restrained luxury: warm gold and honey tones, a full-size desk with hidden power sockets, a proper armchair and a generous king bed dressed in crisp white linen. The Conrad teddies placed on the bed with rose petals — a nod to the occasion — was an unexpectedly charming touch.

The desk has a hidden panel that opens to reveal four UK sockets and USB ports — a genuinely practical detail. The wardrobe is generously sized with Conrad-logoed robes, an ironing board, complimentary shoe shine service and the usual safe. In-room Nespresso with WG 1837 tea selection. Minibar is stocked with Grey Goose, Kavalan and Macallan expressions alongside standard soft drinks and snacks.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is a full marble affair — warm honey-toned stone throughout, with a separate soaking bathtub and a glass-enclosed walk-in shower. Double vanity sinks with Byredo Mojave Ghost amenities, a separate toilet room with telephone, and a magnifying mirror on an extending arm. There is also a TV remote and phone on the bathroom vanity. The overall scale is generous and entirely appropriate for the positioning of the hotel.

The Pool

The outdoor pool at the Conrad Hong Kong is one of those urban pools that genuinely surprises you. Set on the 4th floor podium between the Conrad and the adjacent towers of Pacific Place, it is surrounded by glass and steel skyscrapers on all sides — the Bank of China Tower and HSBC Building are visible beyond. The effect is unusual: a resort-style setting in the heart of one of the world's most vertical cities. The pool is a full 25 metres, well maintained, and complemented by teal sun loungers and shade umbrellas. Towels and complimentary sunscreen are provided at the pool desk.

The Executive Lounge

The Executive Lounge at the Conrad Hong Kong is located on the 59th floor — and that alone tells you something about what to expect. The views from up here are extraordinary: a panoramic sweep across Victoria Harbour, Kowloon and the surrounding hillsides that changes character entirely from morning to evening. The lounge itself was recently refurbished and is smart without being showy — leather tub chairs, orchid arrangements and a long bar of chilled drinks running down one wall.

The evening canapé service runs from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and is generous enough to effectively substitute for dinner. Hot dishes change nightly alongside a cold selection of charcuterie, cheese and fruit. Morning breakfast in the lounge is a good alternative to the main buffet if a quieter experience is preferred.

Breakfast at Brasserie on the Eighth

Breakfast is served at Brasserie on the Eighth and is one of the more comprehensive hotel breakfast buffets I have encountered in a city property. The spread covers an enormous range: a live dim sum station with har gow, siu mai and steamed rice rolls alongside congee and noodles; a full Western section with a live egg station and charcuterie; Indian breakfast options; freshly cut tropical fruit; yoghurt, granola and pastries. The restaurant itself occupies a wide, well-lit floor and feels appropriately grand for the occasion of breakfast in Hong Kong.

The Lobby Bar & Evening

The lobby bar operates through the day and evening, and comes into its own after dark. Live music — piano and vocals — begins in the early evening and the warm, low-lit space fills gradually with hotel guests and local professionals. It is the kind of hotel bar that has a genuine atmosphere without manufacturing it, a quality that cannot be replicated in a newly opened property and that the Conrad carries naturally as a result of its 35-year presence in the city.

The Verdict

"The Conrad Hong Kong is a hotel that understands what luxury actually means: not the most fashionable finishes, but the most considered service. The room is excellent, the pool is a genuine surprise in the middle of Admiralty, and the Executive Lounge on the 59th floor is among the better hotel lounges in Asia. But the moment that defines this stay — and that I will still be recounting years from now — is the phone. The concierge team tracked it down, recovered it, charged it, and left a note. That is not a policy. That is a person deciding to do the right thing. The Conrad Hong Kong earns its five stars for that alone, and then some."

Who It's For

Business travellers, couples visiting Hong Kong who want a central Admiralty base with Victoria Harbour views, and Hilton Diamond members who will appreciate the Executive Lounge access. Those seeking the most contemporary or design-forward property in Hong Kong should look elsewhere — this is a hotel that values tradition and service over style. For many, that is precisely the point.
